After several years with a national "big eight" accounting firm, John Smith founded a local CPA firm operating in the Denver metro area in 1983. Now recognized as one of the top ten local Denver area CPA firms, JDS Professional Group remains controlled by John Smith and is an affiliate service partner of the OnePoint Companies.
Seeking to address the growing need for alternative outsource solutions for Oregon state customers, Ron Burns and John Smith founded OnePoint HR Oregon in 2006, designed to provide Professional Employer Organization (PEO)* services, Human Resource Outsourcing (HRO)** and payroll services (also known as co-employment or employee leasing).
Ron Burns has been in the Oregon PEO industry since 1997. Prior to the opening of OnePoint HR Oregon, Ron developed the PEO concept for another Oregon-based firm. Ron has a BS in Business Management from the University of Phoenix and is also licensed in Property/Casualty Insurance and Health/Life Insurance. Prior to being in the PEO Industry, Ron had 25 years experience in the food service industry and was co-founder of Egg Roll Fantasy, a frozen food manufacturer that nationally distributed its frozen food product.
*PEO: professional employer organization is a single source provider of integrated services which enable business owners to cost-effectively outsource the management of human resources, employee benefits, payroll and workers' compensation and other strategic services, such as risk/safety management, and development. It does this by hiring a client company's employees, thus becoming their employer of record for tax purposes and insurance purposes. This practice is known as co-employment.
**HRO: human resource outsourcing is a parallel service structure (complete HRO) that consists of outsourcing of the same functions (as PEO) under a non-co-employment structure. This is for those clients who either choose not to enter into a co-employment relationship or who cannot, due to legal or contractual restrictions. In this instance, the client normally provides its own single-plan worker's compensation insurance.
